Week One is in the books for 806 Football and while there were some games that went according to plan, there was also some eye-opening results that left us shocked and wondering what’s next for those teams. Let’s take a look back at week one’s notes that stuck out to me.
1. Amarillo’s defense is special, and if they find offense when they need it they’ll be major contenders again in 5A DI. To defeat in what I thought was the best team in the 806, the Palo Duro dons by 14 and hold them to seven points is astounding! Coach Dunnam is a hell of a coach and the Sandies are relentless. They have a big one Friday against Cleveland, NM but I expect them to win that one too!
2. Is this the worst start for the Pirates in recent memory? Wolfforth-Frenship beat them 50-17 but wasn’t the worst loss. Their starting quarterback Lunesmann was injured and won’t be back this season. There’s coaches I believe in and Chip Darden is at the top of the list. With that being said, it’s going to take some magic to get Lubbock-Cooper to the playoffs. I believe, it’s just going to be tough.
3. Coronado showed flashes in their loss, while Monterey showed grit in their win. The Mustangs were up 28-9 at the half and looked to be heading in the direction of a win on Friday in the Rivalry game, but Coach Sims’ Plainsmen responded and came back to upend Monterey in a thriller, 36-35! How will the Mustangs respond in week two against Lubbock on Thursday? Will Monterey keep their momentum in their Friday home tilt against Abilene Wylie?
4. New Home will have get it together quickly because their schedule doesn’t get any easier. The Leopards were in the game all the way into the late stages of the third quarter against Slaton but two costly interceptions, including the one from JC Rodriguez that he took to the house for a pick-6, deemed costly in their 35-14 loss to the Tigers. Coach Ward will have to regroup quickly as the Leopaads open their home schedule Friday against #3 Ropes; a team that is chomping at the bit to get going as they didn’t play in week one.
5. Estacado is young, but they are pretty damn good already for just trying to figuring it out. Coach Ward’s Matadors looked fantastic against Lubbock High, especially in the second half where they outscored the Westerners, 32-0. 2029 QB Jayric Ward went 25-30 with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the game as well! Estacado has six receivers that all are going to play next level and their defense, led by Ryheim Hunter who scored twice in the game on offense, are going to be dangerous this season. The scary part about this team is this isn’t even close to the finished product they will put out later in October.
6. If Lubbock High ever starts winning the majority of their games, they will be a problem. I feel so bad for Coach Rodriguez and the Westerners because they have everything a team would want; from resources, to support because their stands were full Thursday: They just gotta win some games.
7. Slaton looked great, but how big is the gap between them and Idalou, and how quickly can they close it, if possible? The Tigers roared to a 35-14 win over the Leopards and used a variety of ways to do it Friday! My question is will the team stay disciplined and bought in. Everyone wants the ball, but it’s only one, if you dig what I’m saying. I really liked to watch their physicality up front on both sides of the ball Friday!
8. New Year, same whops! Canadian, Gruver and Stratford put it in their opponents again and all scored at least a 50-ball in the process! The Panhandle plays football, and very well I might add! I gotta say, Stratford lost some kids from last year’s team and still put up 78 Thursday.. Whooh!
9. Dalhart and Shallowater looked great in wins over Perryton and Childress as both teams lost a lot of kids off of great campaigns last year. I gotta feeling we will see both of these teams like up for a district title again in November! I was surprised more with Perryton’s loss. They got some kinks to iron out the next few weeks.
