AMARILLO, TX—It’s the last week of February so we all know it’s Regional Final time in Girls Basketball. Tonight’s matchup came in 2A DII as Gruver faced off against New Home’s Lady Leopards. The winner of this contest would punch their ticket to the 2A DII State Semifnal next week.
In the first quarter, Gruver jumped out to a 14-3 lead, with Payton Merkel, a 2030 prospect, leading the way with five in the quarter. New Home went into the second quarter, down 16-6.
In the second, New Home countered with clutch plays from Kirbi Johnson as she finished the night with 17 points for the Lady Leopards, but it wasn’t enough as Payton Merkel finished with a game-high 26 points for Gruver in their 55-40 win to advance to the 2A DII State Semifinals.
