In a big district tilt in 3-5A play, the Monterey Lady Plainsmen came into this huge home against #2 Tascosa, ready to give it all they had before the Christmas break in a game that would impact seeding for a very clogged top five teams in the top of their district.

In their first quarter, Monterey, led by Ari Johnson, scored the first five points of the game to get an early advantage before Devaeh Johnson scored five of her own to tie the game at five with 4:32 to go in the quarter. Tascosa then went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 11-5 before both teams battled with the Lady Rebels leading after one, 18-11.

In the second quarter, the Lady Plainsmen started the contest with a 10-0 run, with six of those points points coming from Ambrosia Cole; the 2026 Texas Tech Basketball signee. Johnson stopped the bleeding for Tascosa with a three-pointer to tie the game at 21 and then Monterey went on a 13-0 run to take a 34-21 lead at the half. Ari Johnson, 2026 North Texas Commit, scored 14 points and had ten rebounds and four blocks in the first half as she proved to be an unstoppable force the entire game.

After the half, both teams came out swinging in the third with Avi Longoria scoring the first five of the second half for the Lady Plainsmen, while Devaeh scored the first four for the Lady Rebels. Both teams went back and forth with scores and big plays and Monterey took a 47-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, Monterey kept their foot on the gas with Ambroia Cole and Ari Johnson showing why they are Division One commits as they took over the game and led Monterey to a 71-54 win over Tascosa; the Lady Rebels second loss of the season and their first loss in 3-5A play as they fall to 15-2 and 4-1 in 3-5A. Monterey improved to 14-5 and 4-1 in district play. Both teams head into the Christmas break tied for second in District behind the Amarillo Lady Sandies.

Ari Johnson finished with 25 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks while Ambrosia Cole tallied 28 points and six steals in the contest. Devaeh Johnson had 17 points for Tascosa, and La’Kenzee Dickson had 17 points for the Lady Rebels as well. It was a great women’s game in the 806; let’s keep supporting these young ladies.
