SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE THOUGHTS:
WEEK SIX OF 806 FOOTBALL😳😳😳🏈🏈🏈

- SHALLOWATER SHOWED US WHAT THEY CAN DO WHEN HEALTHY AND LOCKED IN.
The Mustangs blew out the Canadian Wildcats at home in a game on one saw coming, including myself, 52-20. The Wildcats were undefeated and ranked #6 in the State and had defeated some great teams before this loss Friday to Shally. I talked with Coach Vincent yesterday and he told me that’s what Shallowater can do and consistency is the key. They are young, but scary!
Imagine how good they’ll be in five weeks!
- IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A GOOD LOSS? YES!
Lubbock-Cooper Liberty suffered their first loss of the season to Greenwood, 34-14 in Midland in a game that on the outside, folks would think it was a blowout. But, being there live to witness the contest, Liberty just shot themselves in the foot time and time again and those mistakes are fixable. It’s good this loss happened now because I feel like this will focus the Patriots in a lot more the rest of the season. I also think they will see the Rangers again in seven weeks in the Regional Round of the tournament!
- DIMMITT JUST PLAYED ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN THE 806 AND ALMOST WON!
Gotta give some love to Dimmitt! They are playing some good, quality football and they aren’t a fluke!! Slaton is one of the best teams in 3A ball and the Bobcats played them tough and only lost by five points Friday. Things are looking up for the purple nation!
- DALHART IS FOR REAL.
The Wolves just shut out Muleshoe, 59-0 for the win Friday. That was the first time the Mules have been blanked by an opponent since August 28th of 2020 when Sundown beat them, 6-0. With a 5-1 record before district play, Dalhart looks to be one of the 806 teams about to make a run in the dance. They are very impressive!
- PALO DURO HAS FIGURED IT OUT.
Whatever happened with Palo Duro losing 10-0 to Tascosa in week one, those issues have been fixed and the Dons are rolling! They just thumped Wichita Falls Memorial, 48-7 to open district play with a 1-0 record and have won four games in a row over some damn good teams. Coach Mims and his staff are solid and they have a ton of talent and DI players everywhere on the field and a great community: it was only a matter of time.
- TWO TEAMS GOING DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS: CORONADO AND MONTEREY.
Monterey defeated Coronado, 42-7 on Friday in a rivalry game that wasn’t too competitive this year. The Plainsmen are starting to gel with Coach Sims’ offense and their defense is flying around and making big plays. Coronado has regressed on the field the last couple of weeks as they have been outscored by Tascosa and Monterey, 79-7 in the last six quarters. There are a lot of things going on that need to be fixed for Coronado to salvage a couple of wins this year as they are 0-6 right now. They have Abilene Thursday and will have to play better against them or that will be a loss as well.
- WEST PLAINS JUST LOST TO ONE OF THE BEST PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY BY SIX!
West Plains just lost for the first time this season to Liberty Christian, 41-35. That may be the only time they lose this season. They will still get to the 4A DI State Semifinals and have a rematch with Celina again. They’re too good and well coached by Adam Cummings and their great staff. The best team in the 806 to me.
- WEST TEXAS’ COMANCHES REMAIN THE LAST TEAM UNDEFEATED IN MY COVERAGE AREA.
The Comanches, led by Coach Jeff Smith are undefeated at 5-0 and are the last team standing in my coverage scope without a loss! A well-disciplined squad with some ballers suiting up for them too! They have a huge one with #3 Panhandle coming soon. Panhandle the best one-loss team in 2A DI! Book it!!
- IDALOU PLAYED WALL TOUGH AND ARE READY FOR A GREAT DISTRICT RUN.
Idalou’s Wildcats are shaping into form and that tough non-district schedule they played that included teams like Lubbock-Cooper Liberty and Wall, both state-ranked teams, will pay off in their district games. The Wildcats are about to roar… Again! That’s nothing new though, right??
- HOW GOOD IS DUMAS? WE’RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT..
The Demons, led by Coach Dunnam are 4-1 on the season with their only loss coming to Canadian in a shoot-out that they lost on the last drive of the game. But, here comes their critical part of the season starting Thursday when they take on Randall on the Road in a Thursday night matchup. After that game, they are back to Canyon to take on the Eagles. Then, they’ll play Hereford’s Whitefaces and after that… #2 West Plains in another Thursday Night big game! I believe in Colton Mills and Dumas’ power running attack they have. With that said, they are going to be tested the next month, and I’m sure the Demons wouldn’t want to have it any other way. 806 Football is here!!
