Lubbock, TX— The Estacado Matadors came into this contest with a 3-2 record, with both of their losses coming to State-Ranked teams in Jim Ned and West Plains. But last season the Mats’ started 1-4 before their game against Andrews, which has shown their improvement under second year head coach, Eric Ward.
This game was no different as the Matadors started the scoring early on their second play from scrimmage when James Bozeman took it 70 yards for a rushing score to put the Matadors up, 7-0 with 11:41 left in the first. Andrews immediately responded and took the lead, 7–6 on a dominant drive and actually had a 20-7 lead with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.
After that, the Matadors finally clicked. Jayric Ward hit Cedric Ross for a 16-yard Touchdown pass to cut the Mustangs lead to 20-14 with seven minutes left in the game. After a great defensive stop for the Matadors, Ross scored again on two plays: one was called back, but he immediately scored on the next play fr Teon the 28 yard line and Estacado took the lead, 21-20 with three minutes left and then Estacado added another Ross score to seal the game with 28-20 being the final over Andrews.
Coach Ward told his team after the game that although he was happy with the win, they still needed to prepare better. Here is his speech to his team below.

The Matadors will take on Levelland at Lobo Stadium in Levelland, TX next Friday to start District 2-4A DII play. I wanted to give a shoutout to 4-star Offensive Lineman Vershauundrick Smith: he had at least 15 pancakes on offense and had at least two tackles for loss with three quarterback pressures on defense! Folks, that’s why he’s a coveted prospect in the 2027 class.
