SUNDAY AM COFFEE THOUGHTS: WEEK FOUR

SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE THOUGHTS: WEEK 4
•This may trigger some people, but its just the truth•

  1. Coronado has got to find some offense , Or they’ll be 0-7 in a hurrry.

The Mustangs are at a crossroads for the 2025 season. They have the talent and a couple of great skill guys on their roster, and a great staff as well, but something isn’t clicking. Let’s look at their last two games.. They have been outscored 129-14; and that includes the 59-0 shutout loss to Abilene Cooper on Friday. It won’t get any easier as they have Tascosa on Friday, then their arch rival, Monterey the next weekend and after that, a Thursday night game against Abilene: An 0-3 start to District 2-5A DI play will be tough to overcome if the Mustangs want a playoff spot this season.

  1. Lubbock-Cooper Liberty is locked in and will get another week to prepare for maybe the game of the year on their schedule.

The Patriots have really been putting it to teams en route to their 4-0 start this fall, and I think they have two tough contests left that will have their final regular season record at 8-2, or 10-0. Those two games are a visit to Midland Greenwood and their Halloween Night matchup against Estacado: a game that will decide that district’s champion. Colton Bichard is healthy this year and that solves a lot of their problems. One glaring weakness that Liberty will need to lock in on is getting beat deep: Have to make teams earn it all the way down the field; those deep shots are so deflating to a defense and an up lifter to the offense on the other side. It’ll be fun to see how far the Patriots can go this year!

  1. I hope folks haven’t forgot about Woodrow, I mean, the Pirates!

Lubbock-Cooper played Lovejoy, Coronado, Tascosa and Wolfforth-Frenship and came out 3-1 with District 2-5A DII play starting Friday wihh th a trip to Plainview to open things up. How about Ryan Rodriguez?? He broke the all-time touchdown passing record against Wolfforth Frenship Friday and he has another level he’s going to tap into the rest of the way! Coach Darden and his staff are legit.. Lookout!

  1. Don’t let social media fool you, It’s some bad football being played right now in the 806.

As I’m looking around the landscape of the 806 football world, there are some teams with a great social media presence, a great community and a caring booster club. But, when you peel back the layer on the onion, a lot of those teams are playing some bad football right now. I won’t put individual teams on here so the readers won’t think I’m hating , but it’s a fact! Also, a lot of these teams are already in the playoffs! Riddle me that!

  1. Palo Duro is good enough to win their district and make a huge run this season. Will they, is the question.

The Dons lost their first game of the season to a really good Tascosa team and since then have rattled off three straight wins including the 35-14 dominant outcome over the 10th-ranked Amarillo Sandies. Palo Duro is loaded with DI talent everywhere on the field and their chemistry is building. Will it be enough to overtake Lubbock-Cooper?? We’ll find out October 17th when the Dons travel to Woodrow road to take on the Pirates!

  1. Wellington just secured a huge win over a very good Lubbock Christian team Friday.

The Skyrockets are booming! They are state ranked, again.. They will make another deep run in 2A DII, again… And they just beat a potential state semifinal team by 20 points Friday. Wellington just wins: that’s it, that’s all.

  1. West Texas’ Comanches are a dangerous football team, but are on the same stage with the other 2A DI powers this season?

I got to see West Texas with my own eyes Thursday in their blowout win over Tulia, 65-13. I came away very impressed with their units, especially the line: Those guys are massive! Seriously, where did those young men come from to be way out there in Comanche Country! But, I have to play devils advocate here. The Comanches have had great teams before, only to get sent home early every time from the tournament. I like Coach Smith and I know he’s getting his team ready for late November now. And with players like Cayde Winters and Zach Bryant, they will be able to hang in there with teams like Panhandle and the other big dogs of 2A DI.

  1. Hale Center is having a “Hale” of a time, and dominating folks in the process with three-straight wins.

Shoutout to Hale Center!!! After a loss to a great Ropes team to start the season, they have won three straight games without allowing a point in the process!

  • 33-0 over Plains
  • 8-0 over #24 Wheeler
  • 51-0 over Smyer Thursday night

The Owls are, indeed, flying high… SALUTE!

  1. How about two brothers having the same statline in two different classes?!??

West Plains’ Kane White-Tinsley and Abernathy’s Darion Duvall both had three touchdowns and an interception in their games Friday night! That’s crazy, and may never happen again! Both of those young men are talented and are making major noise on the recruiting trail; a trail that is led by their father, recruiting GURU, Corey White!

  1. The 5A districts kick off their race for a district title and home field advantage Thursday night. Who will win these districts?

This is going to be fun! District 2-5A DI will have a wide-open run to the championship with teams like Abilene, Monterey, Amarillo and Tascosa likely securing playoff spots. But don’t sleep on Lubbock High, Caprock and Coronado either! District 2-5A DII is led by two teams in my opinion, and that’s Palo Duro and Lubbock-Cooper. Plainview can score it with the best of them, but they got to find some stops on the defensive end along the way or they’ll miss the playoffs. I think the Bulldogs get in as the fourth seed and will have to travel for a road playoff game. Let the games begin!!
