SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE THOUGHTS:
806 FOOTBALL: WEEK THREE:
- Lubbock-Cooper Liberty is good: How good, we are about to find out these next two weeks.
The Patriots have blown out their first three opponents on the season and haven’t had too much trouble in the process. Well, that will change starting Friday night when they host the Seminole Indians, and then get Modland Greenwood the next week in succession. Greenwood is a dangerous football team that’s ranked in the top ten of their classification. I think the Patriots could win both, but I could see a split of these contests as well.

- Cedric Ross just put on one of the best performances I’ve ever seen; and he did it on seven touches!
Cedric had Rushing four rushes for 170 yards and two touchdowns and three catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns against West Plains Friday night. That’s 321 All-purpose yards and four touchdowns on seven touches! Colorado State should be shaking in their boots because if the film of that game gets out to the right person, he’s going major Power 4, easily!
- West Texas just did the unthinkable.. They ended Gruver’s 17-game regular season win streak!
I gotta admit, I was wrong on a lot of my “lock” picks and the main one I picked was Gruver to upend West Texas’ Comanches Friday. A double-pass and a lot of grit and heart throughout the game secured West Texas a pivotal win over the Greyhounds and a notice to us all to make sure not to count out the Comanches as they just defeated one of the teams that we all think could make a run to the State Semifinals in 2A DII!
- Lubbock-Cooper and Tascosa will still be playing when a lot of other teams start to put their basketball jerseys on.
I went and saw the second half of the Pirates vs Rebels game and both teams have it all: from defensive stoppers, to elite quarterback play. Not to mention the coaches that lead both teams. Coach Darden and Coaxh Plunk are two of the best coaches in the Country as far as High School Football goes.
- Dalhart had a huge victory over Panhandle, but the Panthers still will be a force in 2A DI.
Panhandle lost Friday, but Dalhart is a lot better than we all thought this season, including myself: I thought the Panthers would win this game, but as they say.. That’s why they play the games on the field and not on paper! Panhandle has plenty of time to work on what they need fixing before late November in the tournament. Dalhart, on the other hand, is waking some folks up… Lookout!
- Amarillo will get a tough test Friday against the Northside Dons.
The Sandies are ranked inside the top 20 in the State in 5 DI and are rolling after a 3-0 start to 2025. Now, here comes the Dons of Palo Duro for a huge Friday night game between the two. Julian “Duece” Reese and Jett Lopez are both next-level quarterbacks and both teams have DI talent all over the field including Palo Duro’s Darien Lewis; who has committed to North Carolina in the 2026 class. This game doesn’t mean much, district-wise, but it means everything for bragging rights in Amarillo…
- Canadian just keeps on winning; regardless of what’s going on and who they are playing.
The Wildcats, led by Coach Cavalier, just keep winning and setting the standard in the 806, and Statewide. It’s a reason they win all those titles man: They take every opponent seriously and game-plan different for each team. They beat a great Dumas team Friday, now they gotta get ready for a Muleshoe team who will be locked in after a 20-point home loss to New Home. One thing I won’t ever do, is bet against Canadian. That’s a big mistake lol!
- There is a lot of parity in the 806 this year: There isn’t a real clear-cut dominant team besides West Plains.
Yes, West Plains is the real deal and they really took it to Estacado in their 63-34 win Friday. Reid Macon leads a scary offense with weapons all over field like Bentancourt and White-Tinsley, who has committed verbally to UTEP in the 2026 class. Other than that, it’s wide open like Randy Moss with one-on-one coverage on the 806; it should be fun the rest of the way!
- People thought the sky was falling when New Home lost, but now they should be favored in every game left on their schedule besides one.
New Home’s Leopards had a tough first three games against Lubbock-Cooper Liberty, Ropes and Muleshoe and came out 2-1 with another tough one against Denver City coming Friday; a game I think they should win as well. Now, I don’t see another loss for them until they play at Post on October 24th. They could win that one too, but it’ll be tough for them. I like what I’m seeing from Coah Ward and his new staff. I like the watches too as they are leading the way, technology-wise in the Country: The video I shared of their watch play-calling has over a million views in less than a month, so other people like to as wel!
- Slaton is a tough team, they’ll need to be to get this win Friday.
The Tigers have took it to their first three opponents this season including an eye-opening 35-7 win over New Deal Friday night. They will have another big game Friday on the road and will have to be locked in to get a win in this contest as well. If they win this one, they could go undefeated this season before the playoffs start. Who would’ve thunk it before the season started that Slaton’s Tigers would be this good?!?? Me!! lol!
