MONTEREY IS READY TO KEEP STACKING AFTER GREAT 2024 SEASON

I started off my 2025 Summer workout tour at Monterey High School this morning (June 2nd). The Plainsmen have went through a couple of changes this season already as Coach Thrash has departed and Coach Jason Sims has taken over as the Head Coach.

Coach Sims was the Offensive Coordinator last season and also had a great run at Childress High school as well. Sims has a lot of weapons at his disposal even though players like Luke Arrington, Dez Williams, and others have graduated from the program. Starting with players like Javion Ramon, Monterey should be well-equipped to defend their District 2-5A title this fall.

There were some notable things that I noticed during my viewing of their practice: Here are some of those instances.

QUARTERBACK COMPETITION

There is an open Quarterback competition going on between Q Boyd and Dallas Trevino. According to a few coaches, Boyd has really impressed in the winter and early summer workouts so he will get a shot to command Coach Sims’ offense, if he can beat out Dallas; which will be very hard to do: Dallas is good!

KJ RUSSELL LOOKS OUTSTANDING

KJ is healthy, and when he is… He’s a major problem for any opposing team that lines up against him. The 2026 Defensive Linemen was very sharp in practice and looks like he’s gotten faster in the trenches since I saw him pre-injury last year.

A LOT OF YOUNG TALENT IS ON 50TH

One fact that was clearly noticed in practice from me was the talent depth the Plainsmen have. From Noah Alexander, to Noah Gonzales, to Larry Galloway and Zayden Ruiz as well, the Plainsmen have some deep talent and should be able to put these guys in space a lot this fall with an experienced Offensive Line coming back this season.

RANON WILL BE AN ALL-STATE TALENT FOR MONTEREY

JAVION RAMON, 2026 DL/EDGE, MONTEREY HS

Javion Ramon is 6’6” and 220 pounds and comes to Monterey from Trinity Christian High! As Coaches have made their rounds on the recruiting trail this spring, Ramon has been catching some eyes as he has garnered offers from Utah and Baylor already! He will take off this summer and have an outstanding season for Monterey’s defense!
