TASCOSA VS. ODESSA PERMIAN: Lots of highlights in this one as Tascosa travelled to Odessa and nearly pulled out a victory for only the 3rd time in Odessa in the long series dating back to 1959. The highlights started right away in the first quarter as Permian’s Alexx Cruz took the opening kickoff back 92 yards for the first scoring. The score remained 7-0, until Tascosa’s Coltyn Fulton connected with TJ Tillman on the first of Tillman’s three touchdowns as he caught a pass and raced 60 yards for the tying TD with 10:27 left. Permian’s all-purpose running back Gavin Black responded with a 14-yard run for a 14-7 margin. However, Fulton responded with the 2ndof three TD passes on the day, this time a 12-yarder to Josiah Fields which tied the score after the point after TD. Permian’s Jakob Garcia completed the 1st quarter scoring with a 22-yard run to make it 21-14. The 35 total points scored in the 1stquarter was the most in a Tascosa game in the 1st quarter by both teams since Tascosa led 28-9 (37 points) at the end of the first quarter against Caprock in 2014. From there, Tascosa and Permian traded 2nd quarter TD’s as the Rebels Taurean Johnson scored on a 45-yard run with 11:43 left, followed by Black’s 6-yard run for a 28-21 lead with 4:33 left. The Rebels tied it up with Fulton’s 2nd TD pass to Tillman, this time from 58-yards out with 2:50 left and took the lead into halftime with a 9-yard run by Za’Cory Fisher with 1:14 left for a 35-28 lead. The start of the 2nd half was electric as Tillman took the ball back 106 yards on the kickoff to move the score to 42-28 for the biggest lead by either team of the night. The 106 yards was one yard short of the Tascosaschool record held by Stephon McQueen’s 107 yard kickoff return vs. Lubbock Monterey in 1990. Following that score Permian, went to work as they scored two 3rdquarter touchdowns on runs by Black of 8 and 2 yards followed up each time by successful 2-point conversions to jump into the lead 44-42 with the final TD with 1:04 left in the 3rd quarter. The scoring added a 4th quarter touchdown by Permian on a 7-yard pass from Garcia to John Paul Uranga to make the score 50-42 as Permian missed the PAT. Tascosaattempted a run back of the PAT attempt but was unsuccessful in adding two points. Then, the game came down to one final drive as Rebel backup quarterback Charlie McKinney scored from 9-yards out to make the score 50-42. However, he was unsuccessful in the tying-two point conversion run with 3:49 left in the game.
