The Antelopes of Abernathy are no stranger to success in 2A DI; the classification they have dropped to for at least the next two years as they went to the State Semifinal a few years back with one of the best teams the Antelopes have ever had. So, what will we make of this season’s edition of the Antelopes?

Well, first off, their first two games of the season may be the hardest back-to-back games in the state in 2A DI! A visit from Stratford, who is a pick to get to the State Semifinals in 2A DI at least in week one, followed by a trip to the 2A DII State Semifinalists from last year, Sunray—who is now in 2A DI as well, will be a test! But regardless of their record coming out of those two games, it definitely will be a win for the program.

How? Quite simply out: Iron sharpens Iron. When you play teams that are championship caliber, you don’t really lose; you learn from those losses and that will make your team better when it counts in November and December. Their new district will have some familiar faces like Post, Floydada and New Deal, but also a new team that has moved up to 2A DI as well in the New Home Leopards— who went 11-1 last year before losing in the Area Round to Sunray.

I think their game against New Home will determine the district champion in 2-2A DI and the loser will go into the playoffs as a two seed. 2A DI is very tough and will be hard to get out of, but with players like Division One prospect Kelton Carver, who is creeping up on Double-Digit offers in the 2025 class, leading the way with other standouts like Jackson Arrington and Elijah Trejo, expect Abernathy to make a run in 2A DI, even if they start 0-2.
